Application Support Specialist/AS400 Programmer

This position is for an Information Technology professional that has a desire to participate to learn and grow in a fast paced. An understanding of the organizations business goals is essential as well as the ability to adapt and contribute to these goals. An intrinsic motivation for technology must be complimented with a genuine interest in the retail industry. 

Experience with logistics and distribution and ordering systems would be beneficial as well as practical experience in an IT operation model.

The ability to understood business processes, make correction to the supporting systems, and be able to communicate this to both technical and non-technical audiences are key skills for a successful candidate. In addition to technical savvy this person must be a goal-oriented self-starter with high energy levels.


Primary Job Duties: 

The willingness to work on older technology is an important trait. A successful candidate will be able to support AS400 software applications developed in past years with noticeable changes in programming technology. AS400 analysis skills are required as well as the motivation to solve real business needs with older technology.


Although the AS400 is the primary development platform a minimum proficiency is required for all general business tools like MS SQL Server or Microsoft Office. The ability to produce a meaningful and accurate standard operation procedure is required.

Required Skill Set: 


This position requires not only experience but a working familiarity with the IBM AS400/RPG/RPG ILE. 


  • Must be able to analyse IT issue and provide workaround or quick fix.

  • Must be able to work with subject matter experts to acquire knowledge and understanding of existing systems and processes and be able to utilize new found knowledge to provide technical solutions to business needs.

  • Must be able to support and develop programs written in RPG3, RPG-ILE, and CL.

  • Must be able to gather and document support activity and make proposals for enhancements.


Optional Skill Set: 


  • Must be able to analyses IT problem root cause and propose and implement solution.

  • Must be able to design programming modifications to include considerations for database, data treatment and reports.


In addition, the person must be able to work with other departments, remote users, and vendors to provide a technical assist for planned implementation.


This candidate should be able to utilize existing tools and resources to accomplish objectives.
Experience of main operational processes (incident/problem/change) is a plus.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills are mandatory.
